TyreSafe’s family of road safety ambassadors, the McIntyres, are making their latest online appearance in a new ‘movie’ designed to help drivers stay safe on the road. In their latest episode, the safety conscious family star alongside their less well-informed neighbours, the Hazards, who are making their acting debut.
While it may not have a Hollywood budget and star A-list actors, what it lacks in glitz and glamour it more than makes up in its crucial safety message that could just reduce your chances of being another road casualty statistic, advises the UK’s leading tyre safety organisation.
The short animation is one of the highlights of this October’s tyre safety month organised by the not-for-profit organisation which is reminding drivers about the importance of checking their tyre pressures at least once a month.
Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe, said: “Checking your tyre pressures regularly is vitally important for your safety on the road, yet sadly, it’s something that gets overlooked by many drivers. For some, they simply forget to do this, while for others they don’t even know where to start. This latest animation aims to address this and give some simple advice and instructions in a fun and engaging manner.”
Despite only taking a few minutes to complete, significant numbers of drivers continue to put themselves and other road users at risk by failing to make the checks. Indeed, a recent European survey conducted by one TyreSafe member involving more than 27,000 cars found that 78 percent were being driven on under-inflated tyres. More alarmingly, more than a quarter (28.4 percent) had tyres that were considered seriously or severely under-inflated, greatly reducing their safety on the road.
When tyres are under-inflated, not only are drivers’ running costs increased through higher fuel bills and rapid tyre wear, they are much more likely to suffer from a dangerous rapid deflation as the tyres can overheat. This type of event most typically occurs after periods of prolonged high-speed running such as on motorways or busy A-roads.
To reduce the risks from running on under-inflated tyres, TyreSafe is advising drivers to check their tyres at least once a month and before any long journeys.
